Guwahati, June 18: Cracking down on illegal access to the BP Chaliha swimming pool inside R.G. Baruah sports complex in the city, police last night arrested four Board of Sports employees, including a supervisor, after a raid.
They have been charged with admitting unauthorised people during the recreation hours in the pool.
Supervisor Sulabh Mohanty, coupon counter assistant Tapan Nath and gatemen Sahar Ali and Heremba Barua were handed over to the police after a surprise raid by officer on special duty and deputy director Rajib Prakash Baruah.
The officer found unauthorised individuals availing of the pool by bribing the employees. The recreation session between 7.30 pm and 8.30 pm provides the cash-strapped board with much-needed revenue.
A source said that, at least, 20 people without valid passes were found in the pool during the recreation shift.
“There were 79 people in that shift, but the permissible capacity is 40. During the raid following complaints, Baruah found that 36 coupons priced at Rs 40 per hour had been issued yesterday. There were 20 members having annual pre-paid coupons and three guest-coupon holders,” the source said.
During interrogation, the three accused admitted to carrying out the fraud for several years and said more employees were involved in the racket. A board insider blamed the officials for the mess. “Had they been alert, such a situation could have been avoided,” he said.
