Kokrajhar, June 2: Eight persons, including two policemen, were injured after security personnel fired in the air to disperse a mob that gathered on the sessions court premises in Udalguri to catch a glimpse of anti-talks National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) chief Ranjan Daimary.
Daimary was produced in court this morning and was remanded in 14 days’ police custody in connection with a bomb attack in 1995.
Sources said as Daimary was being taken out of the court, a mob, primarily comprising supporters of the NDFB chief, who had gathered since morning, shouted slogans and even tried to break the bamboo barricade build.
A section of the crowd even attempted to garland the NDFB leader with the traditional aronai as he was being taken on a vehicle.
Thereafter, when some persons pelted stones at the security personnel, the latter, at first, resorted to lathicharge on the particular section of people and then fired in the air to disperse the mob.
The sources said a stone, thrown by a supporter, even hit the vehicle carrying the NDFB leader.
The Udalguri district committee of Bodo Women Justice Forum, Surrendered NDFB Welfare Association and All Bodoland Tea Growers’ Association submitted a memorandum to Udalguri deputy commissioner Meenaxi Sundaram, demanding an inquiry into the incident.
The police will interrogate Daimary in a number of cases during the 14-day period, said A.P. Tewari, Udalguri superintendent of police.
Golap Deka, a circle inspector, was killed when the landmine planted by the NDFB exploded in an area between Bwirabkunda and Kahibari in Udalguri in 1995.
The NDFB leader was produced in a Sonitpur court yesterday, after three days’ police custody at Rangapara, in connection with the killing of an army officer in 2008.
He was remanded in judicial custody on May 25 and handed over to Sonitpur police to interrogate the killing of 12 people in the Bhimajuli area of the district, according to a PTI report.
