Guwahati, Aug. 20: Unesco clubs will be set up in all states of the Northeast, announced the president of the World Federation of Unesco Clubs, Dharmendra Bhatnagar, here today.

Bhatnagar was here for the celebration of 20 successful years of the Assam Unesco club.

"We have a plan to set up Unesco clubs in all seven states of the Northeast. Under those clubs we will take an initiative to promote knowledge and create awareness about the ideals of Unesco among people, especially the youth," Bhatnagar said.

The Unesco club of Assam will establish a United Nations library corner in various public libraries, college and universities.

"There are 16 UN library corners across Assam. We plan to expand it in every district and prominent educational institutions in the state," the secretary general of the Unesco club of Assam, Aswini Sarma, said.

He said since the last 20 years, the club has also worked to get the World Heritage Site tag for Majuli.

"Majuli has not got the World Heritage Site tag. The main reason behind this is a lack of proper documentation. We are now continuously monitoring the progress of proposal preparation," Sarma said.

"We have to also promote the intangible components of Majuli. In the past, establishment of intangible property of Majuli was not done properly while making the proposal. But now we are working on it. There have been many meetings among stakeholders regarding this issue in the past few days. Hope this time Majuli surely gets the coveted tag," Bhatnagar said.
