PCC to name candidates

Guwahati, July 30: The Assam PCC will announce its candidates for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor in the GMC council tomorrow.

Party president Bhubaneswar Kalita told reporters here this evening that he held discussions with all the newly elected councillors to reach a consensus to elect the mayor and deputy mayor.

“Discussions were also held with GDD minister Ajanta Neog, Jalukbari MLA and minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, East Guwahati MLA Robin Bordoloi and West Guwahati MLA Hemanta Talukdar on the issue. All the newly elected councillors of GMC will be administered the oath of office tomorrow. We will announce the names of our candidates for mayor and deputy mayor. We hope that the Congress candidates will bedeclared elected uncontested for both the posts,” Kalita said.

Out of 31 seats of councillors in the GMC council, the Congress had managed to win 19 seats followed by 11 by BJP and one seat by the AGP in the civic poll held last month.

A delegation comprising Himanta Biswa Sarma, Robin Bordoloi, Hemanta Talukdar, Ajanta Neog and Dispur MLA and minister Akon Bora are expected to meet chief minister Tarun Gogoi to give the final nod to the candidatures.
