Dhubri, Jan. 17: Hectic meetings are being held in both the Congress and BJP camps for selection of candidates for the urban body polls, scheduled for February 9.

Though party workers have been making a beeline in the Dhubri district offices of both the parties after the poll date was brought forward from February 10 yesterday, the AGP camp wore a deserted look as very few workers are seeking tickets.

There are five civic bodies in Dhubri district and two of them had BJP-led boards. Their terms ended in September last year.

Altogether, 78 aspirants, seeking BJP tickets to contest polls from 16 wards of the Dhubri Municipal Board, had submitted their applications in the party office till yesterday.

BJP legislator from Sorbhog, Ranjit Kumar Das, has been made the poll in-charge of Dhubri district, a source said.

Dhubri district BJP president Dipak Kumar Saha said the filing of application for tickets was over and meetings of workers to plan grassroots activities to connect with the people were being organised.

'We will compile all names of aspirants seeking tickets and select three candidates for each seat and send it to the state unit, where the final nod will be given. Prior to this, Sorbhog legislator Ranjit Kumar Das will arrive here soon to discuss the candidate selection,' Saha said.

He said the announcement of names of the party candidates would be over by January 22.

The Congress camp is also trying to complete the process of selecting candidates, a source said.

Dhubri district Congress committee president Sushil Chandra Roy said the list of candidates seeking party tickets would be completed soon and sent to the PCC for final selection. 'The entire process of declaration of candidates' names will be completed by January 27,' he said.

The AIUDF yesterday decided not to contest the civic body polls.
