Feb. 6: The newly-elected Cotton College Union Society has come to the aid of backbenchers by deciding to install sound systems in bigger classrooms to make the lectures more audible.
The proposed sound system is part of the initiative of the students? society to improve the academic atmosphere in the premier college. General secretary of the society, Samiran Baishya, said this has been a long-standing demand of the students who attended lectures in the bigger classrooms. He said installing of sound systems is the only way to solve their problems.
Baishya said they were planning to install the sound system in the middle of March. ?We are scouting for funds to install the sound system. As it will not be affordable for the college to bear the expenses, we are approaching some private parties and have appealed to Dispur to provide funds,? Baishya added.
As proposed by the society, a ?hands-free microphone? will be provided to lecturers and the sound will be amplified through a pair of speaker systems in each classroom. The bigger classrooms are 013, 014, 123, 124 and 111.
The society said this system is being followed in some professional institutes. ?It has always been a problem in the bigger rooms. The proposed sound systems will definitely help the students,? Himadri Bhuyan, a student said.
General English, alternative English and economics classes for higher secondary and degree students are held in these classrooms.
