Nagaon, Oct. 9: Former champions Mohammedan Sporting, Calcutta, scraped through to the final of the 59th Independence Day Cup, getting the better of Oil India Ltd (OIL), Duliajan, 2-1 at Dhing Sports Complex today.

The Calcuttans gained the lead as early as in the ninth minute through a Mike Okoro goal. The Nigerian striker headed in a free kick by Mir A. Haider to draw first blood.

The OIL team found the equaliser in the 23rd minute through the boot of Z. Hmar. He pushed in the ball off an attempt by striker Durga Boro that rebounded from the hands of Mohammedan Sporting custodian Nachibul Haque from inside the goalbox.

The Calcuttans got the match-winning goal off a penalty kick converted by Okoro. The second half of the match ended goalless.

Mohammedan Sporting will play defending champions BSF, Jalandhar, in the final on Thursday.
