Students gherao registrar

Hundreds of students of Dibrugarh University gheraoed the university vice-chancellor, Kulendu Pathak, and registrar Kandarpa Kumar Deka on Wednesday evening over the disciplinary action taken against 12 students on charges of ragging. According to university sources, 12 students were found guilty by an inquiry committee of ragging new entrants early this year in the Padma Nath Gohain Baruah hostel of the university.

Bombs found

Police on Wednesday recovered seven timebombs after raiding Boxirhat Part II village under Chagolia police outpost in Dhubri district. The bombs were concealed in a covered pit. The police earlier arrested an Ulfa militant, Anwar Hussain, from Chapar and seized a hand grenade from him.

Kokrajhar meet

An emergency meeting between the All Assam Students Union and the All Bodo Students? Union was held at Bodofa House in Kokrajhar on Wednesday to defuse tension in the area following alleged attack on Absu and Bodo Sahitya Sabha offices by the other students? union.

Plea on VAT

The Nagaland Medicine Dealers Association has appealed to the state government not to introduce Value Added Tax (VAT) in the state without abolishing the Central Sales Tax. The association said this would lead to escalation of prices of all commodities, particularly medicines.

White paper

Power engineers of Meghalaya have demanded a white paper from the state government on the huge loss incurred by the Meghalaya State Electricity Board due to irrational supply of electricity to industrial units in the state.

Dharna

Tribals, under the banner of Daklo Bango Indigenous People?s Forum, staged a dharna in front of the civil secretariat in Itanagar, demanding closure of the Lower Subansiri dam.

Acquitted

The sessions court of Guwahati has acquitted suspected Ulfa militant Gobinda Kalita for want of evidence in a case registered against him on Thursday. The accused was arrested in Bhutan in 2003.
