Police open fire on mob

Sonitpur police were forced to open fire on an unruly mob when it allegedly attacked and damaged the Borghat police outpost under Tezpur district on Tuesday.
One person, Ratan Debnath, sustained bullet injuries and was sent to Gauhati Medical College Hospital in a serious condition. The mob attacked the police station demanding an explanation on the police?s refusal to accept an FIR.

Bomb defused

A powerful bomb was found in front of the Bebejia police outpost, 10 km from Tezpur, on Monday night. The army later defused the bomb.

Mizo request

Parliamentary affairs minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said he knew nothing about the state government?s request to enlarge the Mizoram Assembly from a 40-member House to a 60-member House.

Industry

Minister of state for planning and development Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Assam government would set up an industrial estate at Bezera near Baihata Chariali.

Refinery prize

The Centre for High Technology has awarded Bongaigaon Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (BRPL) the second prize for the best refinery in boiler and furnace efficiency. The award was received by R.M. Hazarika director (operations) from S.C. Tripathi, secretary petroleum and natural gas, in Goa recently.

NAAC visit

The NAAC has awarded B+ grade to Pub Kamrup College.

Arunachal poll

Campaigning for Arunachal Pradesh Assembly elections ended on Tuesday on a subdued note because of the Northeast bandh and incessant rains. Political parties held rallies on the last day though the turnout was low because of heavy rains since Monday night.

Rebels held

Two Karbi Longri North Cachar Liberation Front militants, Kamal Timung and Babu Kro, were arrested from Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday, police said. A 9 mm pistol and eight rounds of live ammunition were seized from them.
