Aizawl: The Mizoram cabinet on Tuesday approved the Sinlung Hills Council Bill.

Formation of the proposed Sinlung Hills Council is the result of the peace accord signed between the state government and the Hmar People's Convention (Democratic) on April 2.

The cabinet meeting, presided over by chief minister Lal Thanhawla, said a special Assembly session would be convened on June 27 to facilitate passage of the bill.

The state government and HPC(D) signed an agreement on April 2 to find an amicable solution to the Hmar political problems.

The existing Sinlung Hills Development Council (SHDC) was accorded more autonomy and was re-christened as Sinlung Hills Council.

The proposed council will have 14 members, including two nominated members to be headed by a chief executive member.

The cabinet meeting on Tuesday also passed a resolution opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.
