Jan. 18: Ever tried out mathematics on fibreglass models?
Visitors can look for a great year ahead at the Regional Science Centre, Khanapara, which aims to bring fascinating exhibits.
“New Year brings lot of hopes, happiness and prosperity to the people. Like previous years, this year also we are also planning to provide happiness and information on latest technologies to the visitors in the form of new exhibits,” a senior official at the centre said.
The one exhibit, which is expected to become a favourite, is a new virtual reality exhibit “break the bubbles”. In this exhibit visitors has to break the right kind of bubbles, which are moving in the TV screen in front of them.
“The figure of the visitors also appear on the screen beamed with the help of a web camera. One has to break the bubbles by moving their hands and body without physically touching the screen,” the official said.
This exhibit has an element of fun but it will also generate in the minds of visitors as to how it is happening, he added. “If one can generate the idea how things are happening and that will ignite questions and reasoning for this entire process,” the official said.
In the recently concluded Indian Science Congress at Shillong, National Council of Science Museums, the parent body of the Regional Science Centre bagged the most informative pavilion in the exhibition. In this Regional Science Centre, Guwahati played a key role in setting up the pavilion and run it for the visitors during the exhibition period.
Another interesting exhibit, which will be on display in the month of February, is the pinscreen exhibit. Pinscreen animation makes use of a screen filled with movable pins, which can be moved in or out by pressing an object onto the screen. Hence, when a visitor presses his or her body against the vertical pinscreen, he or she will be able to see his or her body profile as if it is embossed on the other side of the screen.
The science park at the centre will have a new section called mathematical totem wherein several fibreglass models on mathematics will be on display.
In the New Year, the existing chemistry gallery will be made into a new one with new exhibits and displays.
Related to the current topic of climate change, a small panel exhibition on climate change will be on display in which several aspects of it will be explained in simple way for the benefit of the students.
“This year also we have got good number of visitors and about 25,000 more visitors have come to the science centre so far in comparison to the previous year. This gives us encouragement to bring in more exhibits and facilities for the visitors,” the official said.
