Tura, April 24: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma today inaugurated the newly created Raksamgre sub-division in West Garo Hills and dedicated it to the people, expressing hope that it would facilitate all-round development.
He said the new civil sub-division was created considering its remote location and the difficulties faced by the people, who had to travel at least 120km to reach Tura and about 40km to reach the existing civil sub-division at Dadenggre.
Raksamgre and its adjoining areas have poor roads and lacks communication facilities.
The chief minister said in the past seven years, the government has launched several development programmes but because of the vastness of certain areas it has been difficult for implementing agencies to meet the desired target.
"In order to ensure public convenience and better administration, the government has created new sub-divisions, blocks and police stations," he said, urging the people to extend cooperation to the administration of the new civil sub-division so that they can reap the benefits of this development process.
He called on the students and youth of the area to look at this opening as an opportunity for their future and work hard so that they can serve the people in their own area as administrators and officers.
Claiming that the momentum of development is faster in Meghalaya than in other states, the chief minister told the gathering that the agenda of the government was that in the next 15 to 18 years Meghalaya should become a state where every citizen has a sense of well-being.
He felicitated three village chiefs who donated their land for construction of the civil sub-division complex. He laid the foundation stone for construction of the district seed multiplication farm by the agriculture department at Napakgre and another for the construction of a community multi-facility centre under the special plan assistance of the Border Areas Development programme.
E.P. Kharbhih, commissioner and secretary, home, read out the government notification for creation of the civil sub-division with Raksamgre as the headquarters, comprising villages in Tikrikilla and Dadenggre blocks and eight villages from Resubelpara block.
The notification was handed over to the additional deputy commissioner in charge of the civil sub-division, Labenstone Ch. Marak, who will be assisted by extra-assistant commissioner Rosalind D. Shira.
