J.K. BARUA CRICKET
Guwahati, Dec. 16: Neighbours Jorhat and Bokakhat today entered the pre-quarterfinals of the J.K. Barua inter-district under-19 cricket championship in Nagaon.
In a high-scoring match, Jorhat beat N.C. Hills by six wickets. The winners, propelled by Paribesh Swami 78 (not out) and Gautam Bhattacharya (53), overshot the target of 217 in 32.5 overs. A five-wicket haul by Nitul Bordoloi (5/47) put the brakes on N.C. Hills. Bungo Singh topscored with 73.
In the other match, Bokakhat beat Tezpur by six wickets. Electing to bat, Tezpur were packed out for 103 in 26.4 overs. Bokakhat reached the target in 26.5 overs.
Sabre silver in Games
Assam today added a silver to their Hyderabad National Games medal haul. Assam Olympic Association secretary Mukut Medhi said Assam have won a bronze in the women’s badminton team event and two fencing silvers.
Sushila Devi and Laxmi Devi bagged the sabre silver today, while S. Ranjit Singh won one in the same category on Sunday.
Dinesh Barua tourney: City Cricket Club today entered the semi-finals of the 11th Dinesh Barua cricket tournament, defeating Guwahati Town Club (GTC) by five runs in the third quarterfinal match at Latasil playground here.
The winners hit 187 for eight in 30 overs and restricted GTC to 182. Ranjan Deka (64) of the city club and Nitin Das (57) of GTC were the top scorers of the day. They will meet New Star Club in the semi-final on Wednesday.
Inter-school meet: Kendriya Vidyalaya today sailed into the next round of the inter-school cricket meet, sponsored by Britannia, defeating Disneyland High School by 36 runs here.
The winners scored 213 for eight in 30 overs and restricted their rivals to 177 for eight. Happy Child School will meet Kamrup Academy tomorrow.
Match referee: BCCI match referee Suren Ram Phukan left for New Delhi on Monday to officiate in the Delhi versus Andhra Pradesh Ranji Trophy elite group four-day match, beginning December 19.
Veterans’ competition: Six teams, including a Manipur squad, will participate here in the veterans’ cricket championship organised by the Veteran Cricket Association of Assam from December 24.
