Narzary eyes C'wealth medal

Guwahati, Oct. 27: Promising Assam archer Belsri Narzary has set her sights on winning a medal in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games before eyeing an Olympic medal.

After being part of the Indian girls’ team that bagged a silver in the World Junior and Cadet Championship, held at Antalya in Turkey from October 6 to 12, the talented 17-year-old is bent on giving her best at the Delhi mega event.

Narzary had partnered Jamshedpur-based Tata Archery Academy trainees B. Pranita and Rimir Biruli to bag the overall team event silver for India, losing to China 190-208 points in Antalya.

Starting as a full-time archer in 2005, after she was spotted in the state rural meet at Chaygaon near here in 2004, the teenager from number 5 Dhira village in Baksa district has so far won several national medals.

The latest international silver puts her in the reckoning for grooming as a probable for the Commonwealth Games. She also holds the standing record of 333 points in the 40-metre Indian round set in the junior nationals in Sikkim in 2006.

“I am confident of my ability to overcome any higher rated player. I am working very hard in order to ensure the best possible form I can attain before the Commonwealth Games trials,” Narzary said.

About the standard of coaching and facilities in India, the youngster said: “We are still lagging behind in the coaching and practice aspects. Our counterparts from Korea, China and others get far superior facilities than us. But with the introduction of the night practice facility in our Guwahati Sports Authority of India training centre, I am hopeful that we will be able to overcome the hitch we Indians face in acquiring arrows.”

Narzary was felicitated by the Archery Association of Assam here on October 21. The association’s president Jayanta Boro also announced an incentive of Rs 10,000 from the association.
