Imphal, Aug. 27: Three-time Mr India, Kshetrimayum Bhaktakumar of Manipur, has geared up for the Mr Universe contest, organised by the All-India Body Building Federation under the aegis of International Body Building Federation, in Mumbai from November 5.

Bhaktakumar, who reached the final round at the Mr Universe contest in 1997, hoped that he would be able to win the competition, being held for the first time in India. The ace bodybuilder would compete in the 75-kg to 80-kg segment.

Bhaktakumar claimed Asia’s most improved bodybuilder title in the 1996 Mr Asiad, at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. The warrant officer in the air force also bagged the runners-up trophy at the Commonwealth bodybuilding championship last year and qualified for the Mr Universe title.

Currently based at the western command of the air force in New Delhi, the Manipur bodybuilder has impressive statistics of 19-inch biceps, 49-inch chest and 26.5-inch single thigh measure.

His solid but flexible waist measures 31 inches during the off-season, while it tapers down to 29 inches. He is five feet six inches tall and weighs between nearly 80 kg.

Bhaktakumar claimed the Mr India title consecutively in Mumbai (2002), Calcutta (2001) and Belgam in Karnataka (2000).

The Manipur bodybuilder, along with four others in the national team, will undergo intensive training in the next three months.

Bhaktakumar, who was here to meet his parents, said he has been facing problems with his food because bodybuilding requires special dietary supplements. He has to fork out Rs 15,000 every month on his food.

The All-Manipur Body Building Association wished him all the best for the Mr Universe contest at a function held yesterday in the residence of state family welfare minister Bijoy Koijam. The minister also gave him Rs 10,000 to augment his dietary expenses.

Chief minister Ibobi Singh also assured all possible help to the champion bodybuilder.
