Agartala: A woman has filed a complaint against the CPM candidate from Takarjala, Ramendra Debbarma, for "outraging her modesty".
In the FIR lodged in Takarjala police station, she said Debbarma entered her house at Amtali under Sipahijala district, 10km from here, on Tuesday afternoon and tried to molest her. She also accused him of threatening to murder her husband.
Tripura went to the polls on Sunday and the results will be announced on March 3.
Asked about the issue, superintendent of police (control) Pradip De said a complaint was filed on the issue and an investigation has begun. However, no arrest has been made so far.
A group of people, reportedly from the IPFT and the BJP, blocked the Agartala-Takarjala road on Tuesday demanding the arrest of Debbarma. The blockade was lifted late in the evening.
IPFT general secretary Mevar Kumar Jamatia, however, denied any "political participation" in the blockade. He said he learnt that a complaint was filed against the CPM candidate and the law should take its own course.
CPM state secretary Bijan Dhar brushed off the allegations and said the complaint was "baseless".
He said the accusation was aimed at deviating public attention from the "BJP-IPFT sponsored assaults" on Left Front supporters. He claimed CPM supporter Premabandhu Debbarma of Amtali was shot at by Opposition cadres on Tuesday.
The injured supporter was rushed to Bishramganj Hospital and later referred to Gobind Ballabh Pant Hospital in Agartala for further treatment. "The false molestation complaint was filed to deviate attention from the attack," Dhar said.
The police confirmed that a person sustained bullet injuries at Amtali. An investigation was being conducted to find out whether it was a political attack, an officer said.
