Tura: Meghalaya legislator Cherak Momin on Monday wrote to Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal asking him to take steps to improve the road connecting Daranggre in Goalpara district of Assam with Kharkutta in the North Garo Hills.
Momin said the 5km stretch of road in Assam, lying in a pathetic state for over a decade now, is in need of major repairs.
In his letter to Sonowal, Momin said the biggest annual Christian convention would be held next year at Rajasimla in North Garo Hills and immediate intervention of the Assam government would ease the problems and facilitate holding of the mega event.
"I would like to draw your attention to the dilapidated condition of the Daranggre-Kharkutta road under the rural roads division of Goalpara. The road is a lifeline for people around the region and despite many efforts, including writing to the PWD minister in-charge of Assam, there has been no positive response in the matter."
Dudhnoi MLA Deepak Rabha had earlier said repairs of the road had already been sanctioned and was likely to be done quickly after the tender process. There has, however, not been any further news about the matter.
"The Achik Baptist Dalgipa Krima congregation will be held in February next year. The same road is proposed to be the only road to get to the event, which will take place over five days," he said.
Momin said Sonowal has confirmed receipt of the letter to him through a text message. "I really hope they look into the repair of the road as it is going to be very difficult for the lakhs of people who will come to attend the congregation," Momin said.
