Aizawl, Nov. 23: The new Mizoram House in New Delhi, inaugurated by chief minister Zoramthanga on Saturday, has drawn criticism from Delhi-based Mizos for its faulty design and construction.

A report said government officials are unhappy with the construction as they believe that the Rs 12 crore spent on it should have shown better results. The report pointed out that Chhatisgarh House, which is coming up near the Mizoram House at a cost of Rs 4 crore, seems to be in a much better shape.

The main complaint is about the faulty electrical wiring, which is affecting TV signals. Already, guests have started complaining that the geysers and TV sets are not functioning properly. The report added that the lifts are also not working. The construction was entrusted to JC Developers, one of the agents for Mizoram lottery.

The building was initially supposed to have been completed by October last year at a cost of Rs 9.5 crore.

The report said the older Mizoram House, located at Chanakyapuri, will be reconstructed at a cost of Rs 18 crore. Officials are demanding that the reconstruction work be given to “proper building contractors.”

One of the complainants said, “While the Mizoram House should have been constructed on the lines of a hotel, no storage space for household articles such as linen, towels, bedcovers and bedsheets has been provided. The government should have given the construction work to a regular building contractor”.

Meanwhile, the state’s general administration department has revised the tariffs of rooms in Mizoram Houses and other government bungalows such as circuit houses and inspection bungalows as follows: VIP suite/rooms — Rs 450 for non-officials, Rs 250 for medically referred, Rs 150 for officials not on duty and Rs 100 for officials on duty. A/C rooms will cost Rs 350 for non-officials, Rs 200 for medically referred, Rs 120 for officials not on duty Rs 80 for officials on duty. Ordinary rooms are Rs 180 for non-officials, Rs 80 for medically referred, Rs 70 for officials not on duty and Rs 60 for officials on duty.
