Imphal: Manipur youth affairs and sports minister Letpao Haokip has urged the Mizoram government to inquire into the assault of a state volleyball player, Sakil Chesam, during the 26th Mini National Volleyball Championship 2018 held in Aizawl on Saturday.

The minister said it was unfortunate that Chesam was assaulted while celebrating their victory against Mizoram, leading to a jawbone fracture.

Chesam is undergoing treatment at Shija Hospital and Research Centre here.

Haokip said such unsportsman-like conduct is condemned in the strongest terms and appropriate action should be taken against the criminals.

The state government had requested Ramavatar Singh Jakhar, the general secretary of Volleyball Federation of India, to take appropriate action. Haokip also urged the Mizoram government to investigate the matter.

Chesam was operated upon on Monday and doctors said his condition was stable.
