Aizawl: Mizoram Institute of Medical Education and Research Centre (Mimer) is all set to open its doors from next week.
An orientation programme to mark the official start of classes will be held on August 8, officials of Mimer said on Friday.
Mimer is the first medical college in Mizoram established by the state government at the state referral hospital at Falkawn village, about 16km from here.
It was established under the centrally sponsored scheme, "Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals" with a project cost of Rs 1.89 crore and funding pattern of 90:10.
Speaking to reporters here on Friday, health minister Lal Thanzara said the college would be inaugurated on August 7.
Chief minister Lal Thanhawla will inaugurate the medical college, while finance minister Lalsawta and Aizawl South-III legislator K.S. Thanga will attend the event as guest of honour, he said.
The health minister said it is not an easy task for the state government to open the medical college as there was hardly any infrastructure. He said the college would begin with 100 seats, of which 70 per cent will be reserved for students from Mizoram, 15 per cent for central pool quota and another 15 per cent for NRIs.
He said at least 73 students have taken admission so far.
Mimer director Dr L. Fimate, who accompanied the health minister, said the medical college would begin classes with three courses - anatomy, physiology and biochemistry - in the first year from August 8.
In the second year (2019-2020), it will be expanded by adding five more departments namely microbiology, pathology, forensic, pharmacology and community medicine, he added. Mimer officials said the medical college at present has 79 teaching faculties and 12 non-teach faculties and has met 75 per cent of the faculty requirements.
They said students will be admitted through National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) and admission will be open till August.
A local student will have to pay Rs 98,250 per year, while NRI students have to pay nearly Rs 11 lakh annually to study the MBSS course in the medical college, the officials added.
