Imphal, Aug. 16: The North East Indigenous People's Parliament, in its recent sitting in Tripura, has declared that people of the region would not accept any legislation to settle illegal migrants.
The declaration was made here today by the coordinator for the parliament, Ningthouja Lancha, representative of the Karbi community Ramsing Kathar and president of the Tripura People's Front Patal Kanya Jamatya, at a news conference here today.
The session was held at Nui auditorium in Khumulwng, headquarters of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council, on International Day of Indigenous People on August 9.
The declaration highlights five aspects.
"The delegates unanimously affirm to stand collectively against any form of political mechanism or act that may further provide provisions for recognition of illegal migrants settled in the northeastern states as Indian citizens without historical legality as it may seemingly disorganise political, historical and democratic existence of the indigenes," it said.
It also lambasted the Manik Sarkar government in Tripura and Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee for campaigning against organising the parliament.
The meet was attended by representatives of indigenous communities from the region.
The declaration urged the Centre to protect and preserve historical sites of the region, retaining their original names and reserving them for activities related to festivals and celebrations related to indigenous culture and history.
"The delegates further determine to bring to a halt to any form of imposition of language and culture alien to the indigenous people, especially among vulnerable groups like Kokborok people of Tripura in their educational system and institutions, against their wishes," the declaration said.
Jamatya said the Tripura government has imposed a dress code for girl students "forcing them to wear salwar kameez ".
The declaration urged the Centre to provide constitutional provisions to check the practice of taking over land belonging to vulnerable groups in the name of development.
