Aizawl, July 20: The Lalthanhawla-led Congress government in Mizoram, which had got an unprecedented mandate, finds itself bogged down with charges of inefficiency, nepotism and corruption just 16 months after coming to power.

This week alone was marked by three processions and a spoof campaign, demanding action from the government.

Students of Saiha Higher Secondary School in Chhimtuipui district protested against the transfer of three teachers, who were yet to be replaced. The students had closed down the school for weeks, but it was only after they prevented the principal and district education officer from attending their offices yesterday, that the chief minister called an emergency meeting and issued an order to appoint new teachers.

Villagers of Kanhmun, on the Mizoram-Tripura border, took to the streets yesterday, demanding action against the village council for allegedly misusing development funds to the tune of Rs 39 lakh.

All five members of the village council are from the ruling party.

The village of around 361 families formed a joint action committee, seeking an account of the money.

They are planning to file an FIR against the village council.

Government employees are unhappy over their pay and salaries as well. Lalnunsanga, general secretary of the Pay Anomalies Redressal Demand Committee, said, “We want the government to be fair.”

Some youths, under the banner of Mizo National Youth Front, planted rice saplings on the muddy potholed main road cutting through Champhai, which is touted as the gateway of trade with Myanmar. They threatened to release fishlings in the potholes unless the authorities repaired the road.
