Nagaon, July 2: Twenty-six newly-elected members of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council will take oath tomorrow while election to the post of the chief executive member (CEM) will be held on Wednesday.

On behalf of the governor, Karbi Anglong deputy commissioner Adil Khan will be present at the council's Diphu secretariat.

"The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled to be held tomorrow at noon. On that day, notification for nomination paper for the chairman's post will be issued. The nominations will be submitted on Tuesday and the election will be held on Wednesday," said a council source.

All the elected members from different parts of the two hill districts reached Diphu today to participate in the first session of the council. Sitting chief executive member Tuliram Ranghang, who went to New Delhi after announcement of the results, reached the hill district headquarters last night.

The new council will have no opposition and this is a record since the council was formed in 1952. Of the 26 members, the BJP has 24. Remaining two are Independents who are known to be pro-BJP.

A BJP source today said former Karbi rebel leader Haren Singh Bey, who joined the BJP last year, is the candidate for the chairman's post of the new council.

Bey, 45, who was the general secretary of the United Peoples' Democratic Solidarity, started his political careerin 2013 and made his maiden visit in the council as Rangkhang constituency's member backed by the People's Association for Peace Agreement (Papa). Bey, along with seven other Papa-backed members, joined the BJP last year and got re-elected from Rangkhang.

"The party is yet to finalise the member who will be the chief executive member of the council. That will be done once the election process is completed. Election or selection of the CEM will be done only after the governor approves the chairman's name," the source said.

Ranghang and former ASDC legislator Jagat Singh Engti, who also joined the BJP last year, are the two contenders for the CEM's post and the party will finally choose one of them.

Election to the 26 council constituencies was held on June 17. The results were announced on June 22. The Congress, HSDC and the AGP drew a blank.
