Imphal, Sept. 9 (PTI): Several parts of the Manipur capital were flooded today as the Kongba river rose above the danger level.

But the water level in the other rivers has thankfully begun to recede.

Official reports said areas in Imphal East districts such as Porompat, Kongba, Ayangpalli, Kongpal, Ningthem Pukhri and Mapal were submerged and efforts were on to prevent breaches in embankments.

Hundreds of houses and paddy fields in all the four districts in Imphal Valley — Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal and Bishnupur — were still under water because all the rivers are overflowing.

However, the Imphal, Thoubal, Iril, Nambul and other rivers have started receding by about one to three feet as the rain stopped today.

Irrigation and flood control officials were helping people prevent breaches in embankments and relief materials were being distributed in the four flood-hit districts, an official said.

Tripura floods

Tripura was cut off from the rest of the country as landslides and trees uprooted by incessant rainfall blocked the national highway linking Agartala and Assam.

An official said today the national highway, the lifeline of Tripura, was blocked at three places in Dhalai and West Tripura districts after heavy rain lashed the northeastern state since yesterday.

Major rivers of the state were in spate and large parts in South and West districts of the basin of Gomati river, the largest in Tripura, were inundated, forcing about 1,000 families to take shelter in schools and government buildings.

An official said one person was washed away by the Gomati river near Panchar Mar Ghat in Sonamura subdivision of West Tripura district yesterday when he was crossing the river on a boat.

Other persons travelling on the boat, including the boatman, were able to reach the bank safely.

The state government is closely monitoring the situation and distributing relief to displaced families. Steps have been taken to rescue people affected by the floods.
