
Guwahati: Ilda Pereira of Portugal won the women's crown and Mukesh Kumar of the Indian Army the men's title of the first mountain terrain biking race in the Northeast.
The weeklong, 730km race, flagged off from Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh on October 14, ended at Itanagar on Friday afternoon with the flag-in ceremony attended by Arunachal chief minister Pema Khandu.
Ilda and Kumar were given a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh each. Poonam Raha of Nepal was adjudged the most promising rider of the race, also called Hornbill's Flight.
Altogether 70 riders from India, Germany, Portugal, Nepal and the Czech Republic participated in the race.
Khandu said the event will be organised in a more grand manner next year.
He said Mechuka was poised to become the numero uno tourist destination in Arunachal as it offers ample opportunity for adventure sports. He said road links to Mechuka are being improved and apologised to the riders for any inconvenience caused by the poor state of the road.
Deputy chief minister Chowna Mein gave away the Best Indian Rider prize to Kumar.
The award for Performing under Adverse Condition was given to Marcellina Sangma, a cancer patient, and Ramlal Rasailey, a para athlete.
The event was sponsored by Dalmia Bharat Cement, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the Arunachal Pradesh tourism department.
