Shillong, June 26: A teenager from Meghalaya is ready to take further strides in acting, including a tryst with Bollywood.

Fifteen-year-old Sylviana Lyngdoh Mawlong became the first actor from the state to be honoured at such a young age for her role in a movie.

As a child, she had dreamt of becoming an actress. This turned into reality as Sylviana made her debut at the age of 14, thanks to her father, Bobby Basaiawmoit, who inspired his talented daughter.

Sylviana featured in Dak Bangla, the first Khasi horror film released in December last year.

Her role in the horror movie was recognised, and recently she bagged the Best Actor (female) award in the Prag Cine Award Northeast-2017 held at Kokrajhar in Assam on June 17-18.

Directed by Kitbok Kharmalki and produced by Justice Marweiñ of Umjer Production, Sylvania's father is a co-producer of Dak Bangla.

The young actress played a double role in the movie - one as a mentally ill girl who cannot speak and is bound to a wheelchair in the haunted house she lived in, after members of the family that had lived in the bungalow earlier were killed, including a 12-year-old, who was gang raped by three men in the house.

Her other character was the spirit that haunts the house that takes revenge on her perpetrators.

A talented dancer and singer, Sylvania, at the age of 12, participated in the popular reality show Dance India Dance Season 3 in 2014, and reached the theatre round in Calcutta and Delhi. She also won the Dance Meghalaya Dance title in 2015.

Hailing from Mairang Bah, about 50km from here, Sylviana is currently studying in Class VII in her village school. She missed classes for some years as she attended a dance school at Karma Academy in Siliguri.

"It is my dream to be an actor, and I am grateful to my parents, especially my dad, who inspired me a lot," Sylviana said.

Asked if she was prepared to take her career to the next level, Sylviana minced no words: "I wish I can be a part of Bollywood one day, and I am looking towards acting. I am prepared to face any challenge."

Basaiawmoit said he was proud of his daughter and hoped she achieves more success in her journey.

"As parents we should support our sons or daughters and recognise their talent and passion," Basaiawmoit said.

Her role in the movie was also appreciated by Bollywood stars like Jackie Shroff and other producers who were present during the award ceremony at Kokrajhar. The youth organisation of Sylviana's village will felicitate her on July 15.

The organisation also lamented the lack of recognition of talent in the state by the Meghalaya government.

"The state government was ready to shell out over Rs 2 crore for Rock On 2's shoot here, but seems to be not interested in promoting local films and tap the talent," the organisation said.

Last year, local girl Andrea Tariang earned fame when she acted in Pink, directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury and featuring Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachchan. Written by Ritesh Shah, it was produced by Rashmi Telefilms.
