Guwahati: The third phase of school assessment programme - Gunotsav - began on Wednesday with a four-day event in 13 districts of Assam.
The programme was supposed to be held in the last week of December but was postponed in view of the Supreme Court's order to publish the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The 13 districts where the assessment is being held are Goalpara, Majuli, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Goalpara, Baksa, Nalbari, Dhubri, South Salmara, Karimganj, Hojai and West Karbi Anglong.
The assessment is held among students from Class II to VIII.
Taking part Gunotsav III, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited No. 2 Sadar Lower Primary School in Majuli district and took stock of the internal evaluation done by the teachers and inspected the infrastructure as well as cleanliness of the school.
Interacting with the teachers and students of the school, Sonowal underlined the positive environment generated in the educational institutions of the school by the last two phases of Gunotsav.
"The previous two phases of Gunotsav have immensely contributed in improving the academic environment in the state. It has helped change the mindset of the teachers," he said.
Stating that children are the future of the nation, Sonowal emphasised the role of teachers and parents in building their character and personality. He urged the teachers to generate awareness amongst students about the importance of environment and maintaining cleanliness for a healthy life.
The chief minister also appreciated the co-operation extended by the people in the last two phases of Gunotsav.
Coinciding the occasion, Sonowal also planted a sapling on the school premises.
Majuli deputy commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha and officials of the education department were present during Sonowal's visit.
The state education department is hoping that the schools in Gunotsav III will perform better than the two phases held already.
State education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently told reporters the performance of the schools in Gunotsav II was better than Gunotsav I and if the trend continued, no school will get D grade.
