Guwahati, May 5: Succumbing to pressure from parents and students, Gauhati University (GU) today rescheduled the dates of joint entrance test for medical and engineering.

According to the new schedule, the test will now be held on May 30 and 31 instead of May 27 and 28.

Students protested the earlier schedule as it clashed with the entrance tests for some of the leading institutes of medical and engineering in Bangalore.

The decision has, however, failed to bring any cheer to students. ?We demanded a gap of aminimum of 10 days between the entrance test under GU and in Bangalore. Students do not want to take any risk and want to sit for the tests both in Guwahati and Bangalore,? Mrinal Baruah, a student said.

He said since the major chunk of students would travel to Bangalore by train, it would not be possible for them to reach the city before May 30 to sit for the entrance test under the university.

A major chunk of students from Assam opt for studying medical and engineering in Bangalore. According to a conservative estimate, over 30,000 students from the state visit Karnataka every year to get admitted into different institutes of medical and engineering.

Namita Bhattacharyya is at sea on whether to allow her daughter to go to Bangalore or make her ready for the entrance test.

?GU should have taken a sensible decision. The entrance test schedule has disturbed my daughter?s concentration to prepare for the test,? she said.

A section of students are planning to take ?more initiatives? to compel the university authorities to hold the entrance test in the second week of June.

They also sought co-operation from the All Assam Students Union on the issue.

An official, however, said the university could not postpone the entrance test beyond May 31.
