Guwahati, June 13: The Nehru Stadium pitch, which is considered an impediment towards producing quality batsmen in Assam, is all set to get a fresh lease of life thanks to the initiatives of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA).

The ACA, in association with the BCCI, is going to re-lay the wicket within the next two months applying the latest technology used across the world.

Confirming the development, ACA secretary Bikash Baruah today said the re-laying exercise would commence on June 20 and all the three wickets would be laid from the very foundation.

According to experts, the pitch, which was first laid in 1963 and one of the three wickets re-laid in 1978, have already outlived their life more than a decade ago. The life of a cricket pitch is quite short in places like Assam, where the rainfall is high.

The wickets are repaired every time the ACA hosts one-day internationals by redressing the top layer with fresh soil.

However, this time the authorities have proposed to dig up nearly two feet of soil and re-lay it.

“We are getting the co-operation of the Board of Sports of Assam (BSA) and the Guwahati Sports Association (GSA) in this regard,” Baruah claimed.

The BSA, which looks after Nehru Stadium, has allotted the ground to the ACA since June 1 to re-laying the pitch.

The ACA has resolved to re-lay the wickets from the foundation itself. The authorities have resolved to add an extra bite to it by giving it a green top with the best quality Bermuda grass on it. “Bermuda grass is the best grass which could be grown and maintained in India. It is not damaged by rolling,” said curator Sunil Baruah.
