Imphal, May 24: Girls outshone the boys in this year’s higher secondary examination in Manipur.
The top honours in all the three streams — science, arts and commerce — went to girls as the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur last night announced the results.
Chandam Geetanjali of Government Tamphasana Girls Higher Secondary School, Diana Thongjaomayum of Harvard School and Shikha Jain of S.D. Jain Mahavir Higher Secondary School took the first positions in arts, science and commerce.
The private schools did better than the government-run ones. However, the result sheets released by the council did not mention the pass percentage. Last year, it was 29.52 per cent.
Geetanjali, who topped the arts stream, said she wanted to join the civil services.
Commerce topper Shikha wants to be a computer professional, while Diana will be seeking admission to a good college in Delhi.
The toppers said the existing law and order situation had affected the academic atmosphere in the state, and the teaching standards in government-run schools was far behind the private schools.
Chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh today said the performance of state-run schools has been dismal over the past few years.
Laying the foundation stone of Mega Manipur School, a private institution, in Imphal East, Ibobi Singh said lack of dedication, discipline and work culture were the main reasons behind the poor performance of government schools.
“Private schools could shine as a result of stiff competition, while the number of students in government schools are dwindling gradually as the quality of teaching is getting poorer. In most state-run schools in the state capital, the teacher-student ratio is more or less the same,” he said.
