Guwahati/Delhi, Jan. 24: Former MP Ranee Narah was today evicted from her government accommodation in the posh South Avenue locality, which she was occupying “illegally” since 2004.

A large contingent of CPWD officials and employees swooped down at Ranee’s 147 and 149 South Avenue residence and lined up the furniture by the road.

The former MP has been staying in that house — two houses turned into one accommodation — since 1998. Wife of Assam water resources minister Bharat Narah, Ranee had lost the last Lok Sabha election.

The eviction drive, conducted in adherence to a Supreme Court directive, lasted for over three hours.

CPWD sources said that despite warnings from the government, the former MP had continued to occupy the government accommodation.

Ranee, who is at her constituency in Lakhimpur, said tonight that the eviction was conducted in a very “inhuman manner”.

Her two sons — one in Class IX and the other in Class IV in Delhi — were in school during the eviction drive. They were later escorted to Assam Bhawan.

Ranee said she had lost her credit card in the eviction drive and has asked her lawyer to file an FIR. She will reach Delhi tomorrow.

“My ornaments and some cash were there. After reaching, I will know whether they are there and only then I will decide what step is to be taken,” she said.

She said she had requested the house committee chairman to extend her stay at the house till January 30, as her sons’ exams were on. “The chairman verbally extended my stay. And no notice was served on me to vacate the house before that,” she added.

The houses she has been occupying have been allotted to another Assam MP, Anwar Hussain.

She had been asked to shift to a guest accommodation, but refused saying that the house was not properly renovated.

The Supreme Court had asked the Centre and state governments in 2005 to vacate all government accommodation occupied illegally.

Recently, the Centre submitted a list containing names of 400 persons who are illegally occupying government accommodation.

Coincidentally, the petition filed by Ranee in the Supreme Court challenging the election of AGP MP from Lakhimpur, Arun Sarma, will come up for hearing tomorrow.
