Guwahati, April 30: Hindustan Unilever Ltd's newly-commissioned unit at Tinsukia will meet the rising consumer demand for personal care products, a company official said today.
The company that has been manufacturing in Assam since 2001 and has three units in Doomdooma of Tinsukia has invested around Rs 1,000 crore for its fourth unit.
The investment is consistent with its commitment to the Centre's Make in India initiative.
"The new unit, which started commissioning in the last week of March, will meet the increasing consumer demand for personal care products. The company's penetration regarding the business of personal care products is less in Southeast Asia and it provides immense opportunities for growth. The new unit will be a driving force in pursuing that objective," the official said.
He added that the unit will augment the production capacity of personal care products and function as a strategic sourcing site.
"The additional capacity for manufacturing personal care products will be primarily used to support the company's growth and serve its domestic consumers better. The products made here could also be exported depending on the export requirements," he said.
At present, the company has three units that manufacture personal care products such as shampoo, cream, lotion and toothpaste.
"We have had excellent experience in operating out of Assam and therefore, we have invested in the fourth unit here," the official said.
The company already has a wide footprint of manufacturing operations with over 30 factories across the country.
The launch of its fourth unit reinforces its long-term commitment to Assam. The firm also acknowledges the support from the state government and the local community.
It enjoys strong market shares in the Northeast and its sales is also fairly proportional to the size of market in the region. The company is working on increasing the footprint of its suppliers in Assam through several supplier integration initiatives.
"These initiatives are under various stages of planning and execution which will help increase the material supply capability in the region," the official added.
