Guwahati, July 8: NF Railway SC today defeated Food Corporation of India SC 5-0 to storm into the quarter-finals of the Premier Agro Bio-Tech ninth N.N. Bhattacharya knockout football tournament, organised by the Guwahati Sports Association, at Nehru Stadium here.
In a tame one-sided affair, the railmen started off as clear favourites with the opponents hardly matching up in any area.
Though it took 32 minutes for the railmen to ruffle the net for the first time, when Sibra Narzary guided home a flag kick by Jelendra Brahma, it was the railmen themselves who initiated the moves quite late.
Conceding the first goal, the FCI men made some inroads into the Railway territory but could not penetrate the defence line on most occasions.
On the contrary, Sibra Narzary took the opportunity to consolidate the lead with another goal off a counter-attack during the injury time in the first half.
Leading 2-0 into the second session, the experienced railmen did not waste any opportunity as Green Valley SC recruit Chayaram Basumatary made calculated use of his left foot to tap in a cross by Jelendra Brahma from the right flank in the 49th minute.
Ten minutes later, Brahma made it 4-0 with a well anticipated follow through to nudge in the ball which opponent custodian Gobinda Boro could not collect after tackling Chayaram Basumatary’s solo effort inside the goalbox.
Midway into the second half, the FCI men got few opportunities to score but were squandered by Sobilal Konwar and Brdwim Basumatary in a one-to-one situation with Railway keeper N. Ingo Singh.
FCI glovesman Boro was humiliated the most when Shankar Sil of NF Railway pushed in the fifth goal for his side right between his legs in a one-to-one inside the box.
The railmen will meet Gauhati Town Club in the round of eight on Sunday.
Maharana Athletic Club will meet Assam State Electricity Board in a first-round match tomorrow.
