Nov. 13: A unit of city police arrested an Ulfa militant who had disguised himself as an autorickshaw driver, from a house at Sijubari in Hatigaon police station area, in a pre-dawn swoop today.

A source identified the accused as Rajib Choudhury alias S. Hoque. “His arrest was based on the confession of self-styled corporal of Ulfa, Pankaj Gogoi alias Vicky, who was arrested from Lachitnagar on Friday.”

“Choudhury, who is from Bhella village in Barpeta district, was picked up around 2am today,” he said.

The police said Choudhury — in his mid-thirties — is a member of the outfit’s medical wing and his primary job was to arrange for the treatment of ailing Ulfa rebels in city hospitals. Choudhury joined Ulfa nearly 12 years ago. “Both Gogoi and Choudhury have been arrested in connection with a case registered at Chandmari police station. More arrests could be made on the basis of confession made by the duo,” he said.

He said Gogoi, from Tinkhong in Dibrugarh district, surrendered at Laipuli in Tinsukia in 2008 but rejoined the outfit last year. He was working under self-styled sergeant major of Ulfa, Babul Gogoi, alias Bipul Mahanta.

In another incident, the police arrested two persons last night for their alleged involvement in the crude bomb blast at Sunsali Beelpar on Friday.

The accused, picked up from the Noonmati police station area, were identified as Bishnujyoti Tamuli Phukan and Robin Boro. A hunt is on to arrest their accomplices.

Phukan and Boro had formed a rag-tag group and hatched a plan to carry out extortion in the name of a non-existent outfit — Assam International Democratic Force.

“As part of their plan they lobbed a crude bomb at the house of one Rabindra Sahani at Sunsali Beelpar on Friday to create panic. They selected that area since it is inhabited by Hindi-speaking people, who are mostly small traders and considered easy targets for extortion,” the source said.
