Dibrugarh: The condition of roads in Dibrugarh, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal's hometown, is pathetic.

Major roads under the Dibrugarh Municipal Board are in a dilapidated condition and for the past several months no repair has been done.

Paltan Bazar market road under ward 22 is one of the major roads of Dibrugarh town.

Ammamuddin Ahmed, a social activist and secretary of Dihing Welfare Society, an NGO, said: "We are going through a harrowing time due to dilapidated condition of Paltan Bazar market road. In 2010-11, it was repaired, but after that no repair has been done. We face waterlogging even in winter. During the monsoon, the situation is worse as we have to wade through dirty water as the clogged drains always overflow."

The residents had requested ward commissioner and Dibrugarh MLA for proper construction of the road, but they allegedly did not take the matter seriously.

"Many children use the road to go to school and during the rainy season, they face a lot of problems. Chances of outbreak of epidemics are high during the monsoon as drain water enters several houses," Ahmed added.

He said they had submitted a memorandum to deputy commissioner Laya Madduri.

The condition of the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) Road is no better. No repair has been done so far.

"Everyday we cross the road and the jerking causes back pain. It seems that the PWD is not at all serious about the problem. Most roads in Dibrugarh are in a pitiable condition but the department concerned is not bothered about the problems of common people," said Raju Khanikor, a resident of Dibrugarh.

A senior citizen asked, "Why aren't the roads well constructed? Every year the condition of Dibrugarh roads becomes pathetic and as a result common people suffer. They should repair the road now but they are likely to start work in monsoon."
