Guwahati: The Assam unit of a right-wing organisation on Thursday demanded the arrest of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Maulana Syed Arshad Madani and former AIUDF legislator Sheikh Shah Alam for making "religiously provocative statements" or threatened to launch a statewide agitation.

At a seminar in New Delhi on November 13, Madani allegedly said Assam would burn and the situation will be " maarenge, marenge, aag lagegi" (will kill, get killed and the state will be on fire) if people of the minority community did not find place in the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Madani has said his comments were mis-interpreted.

Madani had also allegedly said on November 15 that Assam will burn "if 50 lakh Muslims are left out of the NRC".

The secretary of the Assam committee of International Hindu Sena, G.D. Kiraan Vedant Bhairab, said Madani should be arrested immediately. "We have lodged an FIR against Madani for making such controversial statements but police have not arrested him. It has been a month but the government has not taken any step against Madani," he said.

Madani's remarks triggered massive protests in Assam and at least eight FIRs were lodged in various places in the state against him and other persons from Assam who attended the seminar.

A police team had gone to Delhi to enquire about what was said by whom at the seminar. They also met Madani and collected documents. "But there has been no new development," a source said.

Bhairab said they will wait for a week and threatened to start mass agitations if Madani was not arrested.

He also demanded the arrest of Alam who allegedly said "they will not remain calm until and unless they compel the Assamese to wear lungi" and "after 30 years Assam will be ruled by Muslims".
