Guwahati, Nov. 19: The All Ahom Language Demand Committee, Assam, today asked the state government to appoint Tai Ahom language teachers.

The committee said around 10,000 students study Tai Ahom in 1,000 schools in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Sonitpur districts.

Although 1,500 teachers are required to tutor these students, the state government has appointed only 200 and that too in 1994, it said.

“The state government inked an agreement with our committee in 1993 to appoint 200 teachers for Tai Ahom language within one year and then appoint 100 teachers every year till the requirements are fulfilled. But after appointing 200 teachers in 1994, there have not been any new appointments,” said Suren Handique, the general secretary of the committee.

Like any language of indigenous community, Tai Ahom is taught in schools as a subject from Class I to Class IV. It is the language in which buranjis (historical chronicles) were written by the Ahoms till they accepted Assamese language as their mother tongue.

A large number of manuscripts written in Tai Ahom are being preserved in museums. Those working to develop the language rue government apathy towards it.

Handique said the state education department did not even bother to publish books regularly in Tai Ahom for which the students have to face problems. “We got books this year. But it was after over 10 years,” said Handique.

The Tai Ahom Development Council will organise a competition on ethnic food on December 15 at Sukapha Nagar in Hatigaon in the city.

The aim of the competition is to popularise Tai Ahom food.

The council has uploaded relevant information on the competition in their website www.tadcassam.org.
