Hailakandi: Members of various organisations and residents of ward 7 and 8 of Brojendra Road in Karimganj on Wednesday protested in front of the office of superintendent of police demanding the arrest of those allegedly responsible for DJ Protyay Das's death and rooting out of the alleged sex racket from Sadar police station.
Das had found out that his wife Shreya Paul was allegedly involved with multiple men, including three policemen and found objectionable messages and intimate pictures on social media. The couple had a quarrel over the issue at their residence in the third week of October. Das later went to Sadar police station and filed an FIR against the police station's second officer Pawan Kalita, sub-inspector Nipul Ahmed and constable Amir Khasru Alom. All three were then suspended on October 17.
On October 20, Shreya lodged a complaint against Das in Sadar police station alleging domestic violence and demand for dowry. Das got anticipatory bail from the Karimganj sessions court.
On November 30, Das committed suicide at his residence leaving a message on his Facebook page and on the wall of his room. Some of his Facebook friends immediately informed the police who recovered his body and the note.
In the note, Das held three policemen and another person from Silchar responsible for his death and demanded action against them for having relations with his wife. He, however, expressed his love for Shreya.
On December 2, Das's 72-year-old father, Pranoy, lodged an FIR against the policemen and Shreya. Sub-inspector Nipul Ahmed was arrested the next day and is in police custody.
Mahesh Chand Sharma, acting officer-in-charge of Karimganj police station, said efforts are on to arrest the other accused.
Attending the protest, which continued for three hours, Karimganj Press Club general secretary Arup Roy said Das's family should get justice as he has clearly mentioned the names of the accused, including his wife and three policemen.
The protest was also attended by North Karimganj MLA Kamalakshya Dey Purkayastha, CPM leader Chandan Chakraborty and BJP district committee general secretary Kishore Dey.
