RGS CHESS MEET
Guwahati, Oct. 19: Day Two of the RGS International Open-rating Chess Tournament here saw a major setback in the second round as fifth seed and reigning Northeast champion Debasish Dutta suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of unseeded Deba Kumar Das.
On the other hand, chess prodigy Shahil Dey, who recently also received the Candidate Master title from the World Chess Federation, drew his game against higher seeded Ritabroto Ganguly of West Bengal in a keen contest.
The meet got off to a grand start at the Royal Global School yesterday afternoon after Kamrup (metro) deputy commissioner M. Angamuthu inaugurated the tournament.
Angamuthu appreciated the state-of-the-art infrastructure of Royal Global School and their support to the game of chess. He emphasised the benefits of playing chess from a young age. He also assured full support of the district administration to promote the game of chess and introduce it as an activity in all schools of the district.
Unlike today, almost all the top seeds won their respective games on Day One.
The tournament is being organised by the Assam Chess Club in association with All Assam Chess Association Ad hoc Committee and Guwahati Chess Association. It is supported by the department of youth welfare, government of Assam, Assam Tourism, department of post, Assam circle and The Telegraph.
Around 240 players, including three international masters, are participating in the six-day event.
