Shillong, March 15: The Meghalaya legislators today criticised the government for failure on its part to check rash and drink driving.

During question hour, UDP legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit said it was a matter of concern that the government had not taken any effective steps to check speeding of vehicles and drink driving.

He said a large number of accidents were reported from his constituency, Nongkrem, on the outskirts of Shillong.

According to Basaiawmoit, though the government had made several claims in the past that it would take steps to check rash driving and over-speeding, no practical steps had been initiated.

Congress legislator Ronnie V. Lyngdoh asked the government to close the wine shops selling liquor on the highways, which compel the drivers to drink and drive the vehicles.

He also wanted to know whether the government has any breathanalysers to detect drink driving.

Independent legislator Manas Chaudhuri said that there is a need to have mobile courts to check rash driving.

Home minister H.D.R. Lyngdoh, in his reply, said the suggestions of the legislators would be examined.

Electricity bills: Power minister A.T. Mondal said in the Assembly that the department would check undue delays in dispatching the electricity bills to the rural areas of the state.

Many legislators from Garo hills have pointed that there was a delay of six months in sending the bills especially in the rural areas.
