Aizawl: The Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) is undertaking a massive effort for the development of the Mizoram capital after it made to the Centre's Smart City Mission list.
In June last year, Aizawl was selected in the list of 30 new cities under the mission along with Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh and Gangtok in Sikkim.
AMC mayor P.C. Lalhmingthanga said after the Mizo National Front (MNF) formed the government in the state in December 2015, massive infrastructure development work has been undertaken in the city. He said the AMC had collected property tax of over Rs 260 lakh in the past year, of which 80 per cent will be used for development work.
He said during the 2016-17 fiscal, the corporation collected over Rs 220 lakh in property tax and 80 per cent of it was utilised for infrastructure development.
Lalhmingthanga said the corporation has completed the construction of a taxi stand near the brigade field at Bawngkawn which can accommodate nearly 135 maxi cabs. A mini-parking lot has also come up near Zirtiri Science College at Aizawl Venglai.
He said construction of multi-level parking facilities is under way at Bawngkawn for Rs 263 lakh and at Tuikual for Rs 494 lakh. The parking lot at Bawngkawn will be able to accommodate 32 vehicles, while the one at Tuikual can park 73, he said.
Lalhmingthanga said new pedestrian footpaths have been constructed in all busy places under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) scheme. The mayor said a park is being set up at Zonuam and steps are being taken to construct another park along Reiek road and a bus stand in the eastern part of the city.
He said free Wi-fi service has been installed in nine important locations in the city.
Lalhmingthanga also said they are making efforts to construct a flyover at Khatla junction and solid waste management centres in the northern and western parts of the city.
