Silchar: Karimganj superintendent of police Gaurav Upadhyay on Monday suspended two police personnel for alleged illicit relationships with the same married woman.

Subol Chandra Talukdar, officer-in-charge of Karimganj Sadar police station, said the husband of the woman, lodged an FIR on Monday against three policemen for allegedly having affairs with his wife.

The two suspended policemen are sub-inspector Pawan Kalita and constable Amir Khasru Alam. The third accused is Nipul Ahmed, who works under the additional director-general of police, CID, Guwahati.

The complainant said he became suspicious when his wife remained hooked to her mobile phone. He checked the phone in her absence and came to know about the affairs.

Upadhyay told The Telegraph on Tuesday that Kalita and Alam were suspended and he had informed the ADGP (CID) for necessary action against Ahmed and that he would be suspended soon. The matter is being investigated and action will be taken according to the law, he added.

A case under Sections 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 315 (act done with intent to prevent child being born alive to cause it to die after birth) and 35 (when such an act is criminal by reason of it being done with a criminal knowledge or intention) of the IPC against Kalita and Alam.

Sources said Kalita found the woman's number on a mutual WhatsApp group and got in touch with her and their relationship developed.

Objectionable pictures of the policemen and the woman and private chats/messages have been circulating on social media for the past few days. Political parties, NGOs and local residents have demanded the case be thoroughly investigated and action taken.

Karimganj BJP Yuva Morcha and Mahila Morcha members took out a rally on Monday and raised slogans in front of the Karimganj superintendent of police's office demanding action against the accused and submitted a memorandum to Upadhyay. They alleged police officers arrange liquor parties at Karimganj Sadar police station every night. Upadhyay said the matter would be probed and action taken if the allegation is true. Karimganj North legislator Kamalakhya Dey Purka-yastha said he had spoken to DGP Mukesh Sahay on the issue. Sahay assured him that the matter would be probed.
