Guwahati: The Tricolour could not be hoisted from one of the tallest flag poles of the country here at Gandhi Mandap as work around the pole are yet to be finished.

The trial has been delayed by two more days and the flag is likely to be hoisted officially on October 2 on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, officials said.

"The trial run of hoisting the Tricolour could not take place today. It might happen tomorrow or on Friday," said Rupak Kumar Mazumdar, an official of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA).

He said it is a project, estimated to be around Rs 3 crore, of the state industries department. "The officials of the department will decide the date of trial run," he added.

The project started in April.

A Guwahati Smart City Limited source said the Tricolour would be officially hoisted by chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on October 2. "The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi is a good occasion for the flag to be hoisted from the 306-foot pole," he said.

Earlier, officials from Bajaj Electricals Limited, the firm which is executing the installation project, said some development work is yet to be completed, other than erecting the pole. "The podium surrounding the flagpole is yet to be built. A park will also be set up at Gandhi Mandap," the source added.
