Helping hand for prisoners

Inmates of the Dhubri District Jail have been making positive contributions to society, thanks to the efforts of the 21 Jat Regiment of the Red Horns Division. The regiment organised Sadbhavana Diwas in the prison for the first time on Wednesday.

Addressing the 174 jail inmates, Col Jitendra Singh Sekhawat urged them to join the mainstream by taking to the right path.

The army medical team delivered a lecture on AIDS and patriotic movies were screened for the jail inmates as part of the function.

Dhubri District Jail superintendent Kabindra Nath Sarma said the inmates have been involved in a wide range of activities inside the prison.

“Last year, in the All Assam Prisoners’ Meet in Guwahati, prisoners from Dhubri stood first in the marchpast and won the first prize for Goalparia Loko Geet and Zikir contests.

They were also adjudged first in the tableau competition at the Republic Day function in 2004 in Dhubri,” he disclosed.

IT laboratory

College students of Morigaon have expressed their gratitude to the army for fulfilling one of their long-felt requirements.

A computer training laboratory has been opened by the Red Horns Division at Morigaon Senior College as part of the army’s Operation Sadbhavana.

State-of-the-art equipment, with the latest Pentium computer peripherals and LCD projectors, has been installed at the college under this project. The laboratory assumes importance because only a senior college exists in the district. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared this one of the most educationally backward districts in the country.

With the establishment of the Computer Training Laboratory, Morigaon can now boast of being on a par with any other district in Assam in having some of the most advanced infrastructure for IT learning.

Market sheds

Troops from the Lakhipur-based Gorkha Rifles battalion of the army’s Red Horns Division recently constructed two large market sheds at Dwarka as part of Operation Sadbhavana. Following a request from the local market committee, the army responded immediately and got the project completed in record time.

The new village haat was inaugurated on March 9 by Goalpara deputy commissioner Utpalananda Sarmah, who lauded the army’s contribution to peace and development in the district.
