Guwahati: For the first time a namghar would be set up in Calcutta with the aim to promote the works of Srimanta Xankardeb among the people of Bengal.
Srimanta Xankardev Consciousness Society of India, an organisation working to promote the ideals and teachings of the Vaishnavite saint, will set it up.
"The idea was mooted after a recent seminar in Calcutta. Many eminent personalities from the city participated in it and after the programme they gave us the proposal. The namghar may come up at Aurobinda Ashram located in the city. Moreover, other sites under consideration are Park Street and Ramkrishna Mission's sites," Himangshu Sarma, a member of the organisation, said.
Revealing the plan to promote Xankardeb at the national and international levels, Sarma said, "Very soon we will start publishing a monthly magazine on Xankardeb. It will be published in Assamese, Bengali and Odia. Moreover, we will organise a series of programmes in Calcutta on Vaishnavism. Many Bengali people are attracted to our works and they have found similarities between Rabindrasangeet and Borgeet in the recent workshop. We are planning to organise such programmes in others states."
The society, comprising members from Assam and Bengal, came into existence a couple of months back with the sole intention to reintroduce Srimanta Xankardeb to the world.
