Guwahati, Dec. 10: The BSF has sought the help of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to secure the release of Deep Mandal, a 25-year-old telecom professional from Calcutta, who was abducted along with two drivers from Mizoram’s Mamit district on November 23.

The abducted trio, according to Mizoram police, have been taken deep inside Bangladesh. Mandal and the two Mizo drivers worked for a Noida-based company engaged by telecom major Airtel to carry out a survey of the area before the installation of mobile towers.

Mizoram shares a 318km border with Bangladesh and a 404km one with Myanmar. Nearly 62km of the border with Bangladesh in Mamit district is unfenced. Mamit is around 160km from Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital.

Mamit district superintendent of police, Rodingliana Chawngthu, told The Telegraph that BSF officials had sought information about the case yesterday for a flag meeting today. “I have been informed that the case was discussed in a commandant-level meeting held in Silsury of Mamit district between the BSF and the BGB. We hope the meeting yields something positive,” he said. Sources said the BSF had provided all details about the abduction case to the BGB personnel, whose help, they said, could assist in cracking the case.

The abductors had called up the company for which Mandal worked last week and sought a ransom of Rs 5 crore for his safe release. “The abductors have even contacted Mandal’s family with their demand for his safe release. The family, I have learnt, has conveyed they cannot afford that kind of money. We are taking all possible steps to achieve a breakthrough. The state police, the CID and the Special Branch are all on the job,” he said.

Last week, Mizoram home minister R. Lalzirliana had convened a high-level meeting to review the abduction case, among others. One of the decisions taken in the meeting was to increase the police presence in the affected area and also intensify joint patrolling by the BSF, the police and forest personnel to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
