Manipur, May 11: BJP activists today staged a sit-in demonstration in front of their disputed office complex here in protest against the pulling down of party flags and signboard by workers of the Manipur State Congress Party (MSCP) on Friday.

Around 70 BJP workers, led by vice-president of the party’s state unit B.D. Behring, demonstrated for nearly four hours from 1 pm, demanding action against the MSCP workers for “defiling” the party flag.

The MSCP workers had violated prohibitory orders in force in the complex to storm the office and pull down BJP flags before hoisting their own.

Though the police later pulled down the MSCP flags, they also prevented the BJP workers from entering the complex. The BJP members were also not allowed to demonstrate at the gate.

The office, which earlier belonged to the MSCP, was re-allotted to the BJP by the government after a faction of the MSCP led by the then president and Lok Sabha MP, Thounaojam Chaoba Singh, merged with the BJP.

The MSCP activists, led by former minister Moirangthem Hemanta Singh, however, claimed that the office complex belongs to them. The BJP has decided to continue their demonstration on the same spot every day until the police arrested the MSCP workers involved in Friday’s incident.

Criticising the Okram Ibobi Singh government for not taking action against the MSCP, a BJP member told The Telegraph, “We calmed down yesterday after the police promised us that the MSCP workers involved in the storming of the complex would be arrested. However, the police have done nothing. We will continue our agitation until our demands are met.”

President of the BJP state unit Meinam Bhorot Singh and leader of the BJP Legislature Party and former chief minister, R.K. Dorendro Singh, who are currently in Delhi, have met the party top brass to apprise them of the developments.
