Imphal, April 18: Boxing queen M.C. Mary Kom, 26, was conferred the India Real Heroes — Spirit of True India award by a private television channel and Reliance Group in Mumbai on Monday.
The award carries a cash amount of Rs 5 lakh and a citation. Mary Kom was among the 24 recipients from several walks of life.
The award for Mary Kom was not confined to her boxing prowess alone, but for grooming young talent in her chosen field of sport.
Mary Kom, who is an inspector with Manipur Police, has received many prestigious awards, including the Arjuna Award in 2003 and the Padmashree in 2005.
At present she is practising for the forthcoming Asian Championship in September and World Championship in November this year.
