April 21: Governor Lt Gen. Ajai Singh inaugurated a transit camp of the Assam Rifles in the city today.
The new Sentinels Ashiana, situated at Khanapara, is the first transit camp of the Assam Rifles in the city. The lack of any transit camp in the city had created a lot of problems for the personnel of the force.
Assam Rifles director general Lt Gen. H.S. Kanwar had made efforts to set up the camp in the city after assuming charge. The new camp was constructed over a period of six months.
The new transit camp will go a long way in mitigating the hardships of the troops who come to the city from various parts of the Northeast, Kanwar said.
The transit camp has a capacity to house 11 officers with families, 135 jawans and 15 of their families. It also has an additional accommodation for the administrative staff. Comfortable rooms and dormitories, reception, cooking-dining, cafeteria, signal exchange, central sewage, pump house and generator rooms have been housed in two separate four-storey and two-storey buildings.
The Assam Rifles is one of the oldest paramilitary forces of the country. The force has a strength of around 60,000 personnel and operates especially in the northeastern region.
