Peace on inter-state border at any cost: Golaghat SP

Golaghat, Feb. 18: Assam police today made it clear that they will not tolerate any criminal elements posing threat to law and order on the Assam-Nagaland boundary.

Peace and tranquillity will be maintained at any cost and in the event of any eventuality the Assam police will lead from the front, Golaghat superintendent of police Prithi Pal Singh said while interacting with student and social organisations and leading citizens of the town on the recent tension in Sector B of the disputed border over the construction of a few thatched huts at Rajapukhuri village near Uriamghat.

Uriamghat, 80km from here, is the last border town after which Sector B of the inter-state boundary starts.

After last year's border feud in August, the situation again became tense on Monday when some people from the Nagaland side built thatched huts with bamboos and corrugated iron sheets at Rajapukhuri, which remains abandoned since last year border clashes.

A total of six huts were constructed in two days, which were demolished last night by jawans of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) under instructions from the Golaghat SP. The situation is under control now.

Additional superintendent of police Numal Mahatta told The Telegraph that after the structures were removed some people from the Nagaland side today gathered at the spot and protested at the SSB camp situated there but when the border magistrate informed them that according to standard operating procedure (SOP) on Assam-Nagaland border no new construction is allowed in the disputed areas belt, they went back.

According to the interim agreement arrived between the chief ministers of Assam and Nagaland on 1979, an SOP was adopted whereby both sides agreed to strictly maintain the status quo on the border. According to it, no new settlers are to inhabit the border belt after 1979. If any new village or settlement has come up after 1979, it is illegal and all such new settlements can be evicted. No new construction or extension of any house should be allowed. Only repairs of existing structures are allowed.

There has been several incidents of violation of the agreement along the interstate boundary.

In July last year, two students of Chetia Gaon were allegedly kidnapped by Naga miscreants and they are still missing.

One person was killed in a firing when some persons laid siege to the 155 CRPF battalion camp at Chetia Gaon in protest against its alleged negligence regarding the disappearance of the boys.
